Quilt size charts for Australian beds

Quilts come in all shapes and sizes — there’s no single “right” size. Some are square, some are long and narrow, and many are made to suit a specific purpose. If you’re sewing a quilt to fit a bed, these charts can help you choose a size that works.

Below, you’ll find quilt size charts based on standard Australian mattress dimensions. Each chart includes a recommended minimum or maximum quilt size, and the closest matching standard quilt size (which is often based on American naming conventions). Measurements are listed in both centimetres and inches to make planning easier.

Quilt patterns often use American sizing, which doesn’t always match up exactly with Australian bed sizes. These charts are designed to bridge that gap and help you decide if a pattern is a good fit for the bed you’re making it for.

I hope you find these charts useful as a quick reference to help plan your next project.

Minimum recommended quilt sizes

This table shows the minimum recommended quilt sizes for standard Australian mattresses. These measurements are based on providing a 30 cm (12 inch) overhang on each side of the mattress. The closest standard quilt sizes are included to help you compare and plan your quilt dimensions.

Helpful notes

  • These charts are intended as a general guide to help you get started — feel free to adjust based on your preferences.
  • Mattress sizes can vary slightly between brands. In Australia, mattress heights usually range from 25 cm to 36 cm, with 30 cm being common.
  • If you want your quilt to hang to the floor, remember to factor in the height of the bed base as well.

A few notes on large quilts

  • Larger quilts can be heavy and may not fit in a domestic washing machine.
  • They require more storage space when not in use.
  • They use more fabric, batting, and thread.
  • Quilting a large quilt on a domestic sewing machine can be physically demanding and time-consuming — consider quilting in sections or sending it to a longarm quilter.
